The Black Man's Guide To Happiness (Once You've Been Dumped)
Published in Paperback by Mellow Mel Publishing (22 February, 2001)
Author: Kenneth B. Davis
Average review score:

A White Girl's Review of the Black Man's Guide
Why on earth would a White GIRL read this book, you ask? I heard this guy was a pretty good author. Wrong, he is a very good author. His guide can be put to use for any unfortunate life experience. As a matter of fact I am on my way to the store for a 2000 piece puzzle. (You gotta read it to find out why) Kenneth's humor was very refreshing. I really enjoyed his way of telling it like it is. I found this book teaching the reader to be sensitive to others, but also to ones own feelings. It's ok to hurt.

Loved it.

Black Men Not Looking for Sex : (Why They Commit Forever)
Published in Paperback by Zevon Pubns (February, 1995)
Authors: Alvis Davis and Davism Alvis O.
Average review score:

You can get a Black man's heart and lifelong commitment!
This brother has an excellent understanding of the emotional and mental makeup of Black men. For all those sistahs that believe men only want them for one thing, Mr. Davis and the men interviewed for this book disagree. The Black man is looking for love, just like you are, but due to his male socialization, puts more emphasis on sexual prowess than his ability to be a good husband and stable family man. A Black man will test you with plays and maneuvers that would be the envy of Michael Jordan! And if you think that sex is the way to get commitment, or that you can get what you want from a man by playing games, then you have important things to learn. You can get a Black man's heart and lifelong commitment if you know what to do, and how to do it. This book, read with an open mind, will show you the way.

Don't sleep on this one!
This book has changed my perspective on how we as Blacks relate to each other. It not only enhances self esteem, it also relates on a profound spiritual, psychological and emotional plane. This author pulls no punches when it comes down to being truthful and honest. I guarantee all who read this one will be changed for the better. I highly recommend it for everyone's home or school library!

Block Scheduling: A Professional's Guide
Published in Paperback by Teacher Created Materials (01 October, 1999)
Authors: Sara Davis Powell and Sara Davis Powell
Average review score:

Block Scheduling
This book takes you from initial thoughts about changing from traditional scheduling, to parent, teacher, and community support for block scheduling, to designing a block schedule that works for your school. The book gives many different possible schedules. (This book does not include information on 4 x 4 block scheduling that some schools are using today). Rationale and research for block scheduling are included. The best parts of the book for me, as a teacher, were how to use the 90 minutes effectively and not simply as two 45-minute classes. There is an extensive list of student involvement activities, help with lesson planning, and several sample lesson plans with grading rubrics. A great resource for someone new to block schedules.

Average review score:

Fantastic radiology book!!!
This is one of the few concise, comprehensive radiology books on the market targeted to a general audience. The ample diagrams, illustrations, and images are excellent, with clear attention to detail. Would highly recommend this book for any medical student, intern, or resident who would like a quick overview of radiology. A very wise investment.

Bodywork: 1978-1985
Published in Hardcover by Edition Stemmle (February, 1995)
Authors: Lynn Davis and Peter Weiermair
Average review score:

The mundane and the brilliant
This book has many photographs of female contortionists bent over in poses which appear not only contrived but also highly improbable. Then on page 73 we find a small masterpiece which redeems the entire book. Lynn Davis' eight year old son stands before a wall, eyes closed and head tilted slightly to one side as he savors the warmth of the Californa sun bathing every part of his body. Stunningly beautiful yet androgynous we are forced to resort to the original method to determine the sex of this child. Although he is fully exposed he does not appear vulnerable. Everything about his stance indicates that he is rejoicing in the feel of sun light and fresh air on his skin. This, I think, is the real charm of the photograph. We the viewers feel privileged to study the boy's body without feeling that we are exploiting him. He is enjoying a moment of freedom and innocence. The boy is enjoying his nudity and we are sharing his delight. It's magic pure magic.

The Boy Colonel
I am a direct descendent of Henry King Burgwyn Jr, with the exact same last name. I know all about my great great uncle and this book is a very good describer of him, his family, and life and times. I have lent this book too many Civil War buffs and it always comes back with a raving review.

BUY IT!!!

Braces
Published in Audio Cassette by August House Audio (October, 1999)
Author: Donald D. Davis
Average review score:

Anyone who has had braces will find this hilarious
Donald Davis--whose humor is in the best tradition of American humorists--is at his funniest in this story. The experience of getting braces is wrapped within a larger story of first freedoms...being trusted by his parents to travel to the orthodontist on his own, finding out about a city larger than his hometown, etc. For family-audience humor, this is a sure winner. A great gift for a teen (ages 11 and up, really) who is just experiencing braces for the first time.
